When searching for a kitten, especially a Maine Coon kitten, many families hope to find the “perfectly healthy” companion. At MyGeekTails, we believe in honesty, education, and transparency—because the truth is, there is no such thing as a perfectly healthy kitten. Kittens are living beings with developing immune systems, and even with the best care, they can still be exposed to viruses, bacteria, and parasites.

This doesn’t mean kittens are unhealthy or poorly bred—it means they are biologically vulnerable, especially during their first year of life.

Understanding Kitten Immune Systems

Kittens are born with immature immune systems. While they receive some antibodies from their mother, those protections fade over time. As their bodies learn to fight off infections on their own, kittens are naturally more susceptible to common feline illnesses.

This is true for all kittens, regardless of breed, environment, or breeder. Even kittens raised in clean, controlled environments can be exposed to viruses that are common in the feline world.

Common Viruses and Conditions in Kittens

Some of the most common conditions seen in kittens include:

  • Feline Herpesvirus (FHV-1)
A very common upper respiratory virus in cats. Once exposed, many cats carry it for life, though symptoms may only appear during stress or immune suppression.

  • Mycoplasma
A bacterial infection that can affect the respiratory system and eyes. It is often secondary to stress or viral exposure.

  • Calicivirus
Another common respiratory virus that can cause sneezing, mouth ulcers, and mild flu-like symptoms.

  • Parasites
Intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, coccidia, and giardia are common in kittens, even when properly dewormed, because exposure can happen easily.

Vaccinations help reduce the severity of these illnesses, but they do not guarantee complete prevention. Vaccines train the immune system—they do not create an invisible shield.

What MyGeekTails Does to Support Kitten Health

At MyGeekTails, we take kitten health extremely seriously and go above industry standards whenever possible.

We provide:

  • Comprehensive genetic testing of our breeding cats to reduce the risk of inherited conditions common in Maine Coons

  • Up-to-date vaccinations appropriate for age

  • Routine deworming and parasite prevention

  • Veterinary oversight and wellness checks

  • Clean, enriched environments to reduce stress and support immune development

Despite all of this, exposure to viruses and parasites can still happen—sometimes after kittens leave our care, sometimes during growth spurts, stress, or environmental changes.

Transparency Over Perfection

No ethical breeder can honestly promise a “virus-free” or “perfectly healthy” kitten for life. Anyone who does is not being truthful. What can be promised is responsible breeding, proactive healthcare, and transparency.

Kittens may experience:

  • Mild respiratory symptoms

  • Eye discharge

  • Digestive upset

  • Temporary immune challenges

These are often manageable, treatable, and part of normal kitten development.

The Importance of Ongoing Veterinary Care

Once a kitten goes home, their health journey continues with their new family. Regular veterinary visits, completing vaccine series, parasite prevention, and minimizing stress all play a critical role in long-term health.

We strongly encourage all MyGeekTails families to establish care with a trusted veterinarian and to understand that owning a kitten means supporting a developing immune system, not expecting perfection.

Our Commitment to You

At MyGeekTails, our goal is not to sell an illusion—it’s to raise well-socialized, ethically bred Maine Coon kittens and educate families so they can make informed decisions.

Health is not about perfection. It’s about preparation, honesty, and care—and that’s what we stand for.
